Q2 Global Security Inc. is pleased to announce that our President Scott Spicer had the incredible honour of addressing the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) Hearing on October 26, 2023. The event, which focused on "Rising geopolitical tensions: the protection of subsea infrastructure including communication cables and pipelines," provided an important platform for the Scott to contribute to the discussion.

The event culminated in an interactive Q&A session with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), fostering valuable dialogue and insights. This opportunity allowed Scott to deeply engage in discussions and explore strategies to secure subsea and other critical infrastructure in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges. It served as a testament to the significance of international collaboration and proactive defence measures in today's interconnected world.

During the address, Scott highlighted the vital role that subsea infrastructures, including energy pipelines, communication cables, and power cables, play in providing essential infrastructure for the EU's security, energy, and communication capabilities. These infrastructures extend for more than 1.3 million kilometres beneath the sea surrounding the EU, with over 95% of the global internet and data flowing through these cables. Additionally, more than 9,500 kilometres of subsea gas pipelines are around the EU, further emphasizing their importance.

Recent events, such as the Nord Stream and Balticconnector sabotage, have underscored the vulnerabilities in the EU's critical offshore infrastructure. This has amplified the need for effective policies, resources, intelligence, and information sharing that align with the EU and its member states.

Establishing interoperability among member states, industry partners, and various organizations, including NATO, is essential to developing ongoing strategies to enhance the ability to identify, predict, and respond to threats effectively.

Scott emphasized that security can only be achieved through effective governance, policy development, common training methodologies, teamwork, and trust. Consequently, there is a pressing need for continuous innovation, improvement, and collaboration to ensure the safety and security of the EU's critical infrastructure, including subsea cables and pipelines. This proactive approach benefits the EU and serves global interests, highlighting Scott's commitment to securing and safeguarding critical infrastructures.
